With over 280 dogs currently in our care and more arriving each week, our resources are under strain like never before. The costs of regular vaccines alone comes to more than $700 per month!
Regular vaccinations are critical to keeping our dogs healthy and happy. Vaccines help prevent infectious illness in our population and ensure a healthy start for each dog in their new home. Many of our dogs come to us from areas where parvo and other illnesses are prevalent. Unless they arrive at our shelter with a previous vaccine record, every Rescue Ranch dog receives vaccines upon intake. These include a vaccine for distemper/parvo and another for bordatella (kennel cough).
A large proportion of these doses is appropriated by our puppy program. Puppies require multiple boosters to strengthen their immune systems against disease. Each puppy in our care receives at least 2 and up to 5 booster shots of DAPP, depending upon their age on intake. With over 100 puppies and young dogs currently in our puppy program, costs add up quickly! We use approximately 120 doses of the DAPP vaccine and 50 doses of the Bordatella vaccine every month.
Snap tests are another critical tool for keeping our dogs healthy. We use heartworm and parvo snap tests on a regular basis. Heartworm is a life-threatening parasite spread by mosquitos. We test all adult dogs for heartworm upon intake. In the rare case of a positive test, we can begin treatment for the affected dog right away. Parvo is a highly prevalent, infectious, and often lethal disease and battling it requires a speedy diagnosis. The parvo snap test enables us to do just that. When a dog or puppy shows symptoms of digestive illness, we can instantly diagnose and begin the appropriate protocol and treatment. Each parvo snap test costs $30 and we use an average of 18 per month. Each heartworm test costs $15.
